About this place
Showing English while we prepare the translationBhimbetka, in the Vindhyan foothills 45 km south of Bhopal, is a complex of around 750 sandstone rock shelters, of which 500+ contain rock paintings. The earliest paintings date to roughly 30,000 years BP (Mesolithic period), making them among the oldest figurative art on the Indian subcontinent. Successive layers of painting span the Mesolithic, Chalcolithic, early historic, and medieval periods — the same shelter walls reused for thousands of years.
The paintings depict hunting scenes (with horses, elephants, bison, and tigers), rituals, dance, and battles. Mesolithic figures are stylised stick-figures hunting wild animals; later layers show domesticated cattle, riders on horseback, and what appear to be religious processions. UNESCO inscribed Bhimbetka in 2003. The 'Auditorium Rock' is the largest single shelter and a popular waypoint. Wear sturdy footwear — the trail involves uneven sandstone steps and short scrambles.
