About this place
Showing English while we prepare the translationDal Lake is Srinagar's most famous landmark — 18 sq km of urban lake fringed by the Mughal gardens to the north and east, the old city to the south, and the Hari Parbat hill to the west. The lake's iconic feature is its fleet of houseboats — wooden, intricately carved, two-storey 'floating mansions' moored in clusters along the eastern shoreline. The British originally introduced houseboats in the 19th century when the Maharaja's land laws prevented foreigners from buying property; the boats have remained a Srinagar fixture, now mostly serving tourists.
The shikara — a slim, canopied wooden boat propelled by a heart-shaped paddle — is the lake's standard transport. Standard 1-hour shikara tours visit the floating Mir Bahri vegetable market (held just before sunrise), the floating gardens of Nageen, and the major Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi) accessible from the lakeshore. The Pari Mahal hill above the lake offers the standard postcard view. Ice-skating on the frozen lake (rare, every few years in extreme winters) is a Srinagar memory; in summer, swimming is discouraged due to pollution.
