About this place

Showing English while we prepare the translation
Dudhsagar Falls ('sea of milk') is a 310-metre four-tiered waterfall on the Mandovi river at the Goa-Karnataka border, inside the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. The name describes the dense white spray that turns the cascading water into what looks like a river of milk. In peak monsoon (July-September) the falls have a colossal volume; in dry season the volume drops sharply, sometimes to a thin streak. Access is in two modes. The road route requires a Forest Department-licensed jeep from Kulem (the entry village in Goa) on a rough 11-km track through the sanctuary, ending at the base pool of the falls — a 5–6 hour round trip. The rail route is iconic: the Mumbai-Madgaon Konkan Railway crosses the falls on a stone-arch viaduct directly above the cascade, and from late June to September the train slows for passengers to photograph the spray. Bathing in the base pool is permitted but the water is fast-moving; deaths from currents are not uncommon.
