Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach)

Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach) is the city beach of Visakhapatnam — 1.5 km of fine grey sand along the Bay of Bengal in the heart of Vizag, named for the nearby Sri Ramakrishna Mission. The beach is the city's evening promenade: families come for ice cream, school groups walk the seafront, and the local fishing community brings in the day's catch at the south end where the Andhra fishing harbour meets the recreational beach. The stretch is anchored by two unusual landmarks. At the north end, the INS Kursura Submarine Museum is a decommissioned Foxtrot-class submarine of the Indian Navy, beached and converted into one of the only public submarine museums in Asia (open since 2002). At the south end, the war memorial Victory at Sea commemorates the Indian Navy's 1971 Bangladesh war. Behind the beach, the Kailasagiri hill park (accessible by a ropeway from the beach road) holds the giant Shiva-Parvati statue that has become a Vizag postcard icon. Unlike Goa, RK Beach is for promenading and watching, not for swimming — strong rip currents and the busy fishing harbour make the water hazardous. Sunrise (the beach faces east) is the best time of day. Local snacks include peanut chikki, mirchi bajji, and the iconic Visakhapatnam idli.
