Adalaj Stepwell

The Adalaj Stepwell ('Adalaj ni Vav') is a 1499 stepwell 18 km north of Ahmedabad in Gandhinagar district, commissioned by Queen Rudabai (Rudadevi) of the Vaghela dynasty in memory of her husband Rana Veer Singh, who had been killed in battle by the Mahmud Begada of the Gujarat Sultanate. Mahmud, struck by Rudabai's beauty, offered to complete the stepwell only if she would marry him — she agreed on condition that he finish the work first, then leapt into the well at its completion. The stepwell descends five storeys (around 30 metres) below ground to the water table, with an octagonal entry pavilion at ground level and a narrow well shaft at the bottom. The architectural genius is Indo-Islamic: the platforms, niches, and pillared landings are carved in Hindu-Jain motifs (Bhavani-Shakti, ladies churning butter, elephants, and floral patterns), while the overall geometry and the brass-onion-dome detailing are Mughal. The descent is unusually cool — temperatures inside drop 5–6°C below the surface. Photography conditions are dim; bring a fast lens. Avoid public-holiday afternoons.
