About this place
Showing English while we prepare the translationThe Bhoramdeo Temple, 18 km from Kawardha town in Kabirdham district, is an 11th-century Nagara-style Shiva temple covered in extensively carved erotic and devotional sculpture — earning it the local nickname 'the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh' though the temple predates many of Khajuraho's better-known structures by perhaps a century. The temple was commissioned by King Lakshmana Deva of the Nagavanshi dynasty around 1089 CE.
The temple is a single-shikhar structure built from black granite on a star-shaped base. The exterior carvings include the standard mithuna couples, celestial dancers, and Hindu deities, but also a remarkable density of regional and tribal-derived figures — Gond and Baiga community members, hunting scenes, and animals from the surrounding Maikal forests. The temple was abandoned for centuries and is now under ASI protection. The site has minimal commercial development, lawns are well-maintained, and the surrounding forest setting (the temple sits at the foot of the Maikal hills) is exceptional. Combine with the Mandwa Mahal nearby, a 14th-century Hindu-Jain syncretic temple with similar sculpture programmes.
