About this place

Showing English while we prepare the translation
The Mahakaleshwar Temple at Ujjain is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva and the only one in which the lingam is dakshinamukhi — south-facing — symbolising Shiva as the destroyer of time. Ujjain itself is one of the seven Mokshapuris (sacred cities) of Hinduism and one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) which last drew an estimated 75 million pilgrims in 2016. The daily Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM is the temple's signature ritual: the lingam is bathed in vibhuti (sacred ash), accompanied by mantras and the blowing of conches. Traditionally the ash came from the cremation ghats of the Shipra river — modern temple practice substitutes cow-dung ash for sanitation reasons but the ritual structure remains intact. Reservation for the Bhasma Aarti must be made via the temple's online portal or in person; standard darshan is unrestricted.
