About this place
Showing English while we prepare the translationMajuli is the world's largest river island — formed in the middle of the Brahmaputra river in Assam and currently 352 sq km, though shrinking due to constant erosion. Until the 18th century the island was over 1,250 sq km; constant flooding has been steadily eating away at its banks, and the island may shrink to half its current size within a century. India's first river-island district was carved out of Jorhat in 2016, recognising Majuli's cultural significance.
The island is the heartland of Assamese Vaishnavite culture — home to 22 Sattras (monastic centres) founded by the 15th-century saint Sankaradeva and his disciple Madhavadeva. The Sattras preserve a unique form of devotional theatre (Bhaona), masked dance (Mukha), and music (Bargeet) — all maintained as living traditions by celibate monastic communities. The Auniati Sattra, Garamur Sattra, and Kamalabari Sattra are the most visitor-accessible. Majuli is reachable only by ferry from Nimati Ghat, Jorhat (1.5 hrs); the last ferry leaves around 16:00, making same-day return possible but tight.
