Munnar

Munnar sits in Idukki district at the confluence of three mountain streams (Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundaly — 'munnar' literally means 'three rivers') at an elevation of 1,600 metres. The British-era tea boom transformed what was forest and grasslands into the tea-estate landscape that now defines the area: 30,000 acres of tea, mostly under Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company (originally a Finlay company, sold to Tata in 1976, employee-owned since 2005). The town itself is small — most visitors come for the surrounding plantations and for Eravikulam National Park, 13 km north, home to roughly 700 Nilgiri tahr (a wild mountain goat species endemic to the Western Ghats). The park is closed February–April for the calving season. Other day-trip standards include Mattupetty Dam (boating), Echo Point, the Tata Tea Museum (which traces the tea-making process from leaf to chest), and Top Station — at 1,700 metres — for views into Tamil Nadu. The Neelakurinji bloom, a once-in-twelve-years flowering of Strobilanthes kunthiana that turns the hillsides purple-blue, last occurred in 2018; the next is expected in 2030. Outside that, the best months are September to March (clear, cool, dry); avoid June–August (heavy monsoon) unless you specifically want the misty waterfalls aesthetic.
