About this place
Showing English while we prepare the translationShantiniketan ('the abode of peace') was founded in 1863 by Debendranath Tagore (Rabindranath's father) as a meditation retreat. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore established a small experimental school here under the open sky — the Patha Bhavana — based on his belief that students learn best in close communion with nature. The school grew into Visva-Bharati University in 1921, formalised by an Act of Parliament in 1951 as a Central University, with Tagore's vision of 'where the world makes a home in a single nest' as its motto.
UNESCO inscribed Shantiniketan as a World Heritage Site in 2023 — the first 'living university' to receive the designation. The campus has classes still held under trees, the historic kala-bhavana art studio (where Tagore, Nandalal Bose, and Ramkinkar Baij worked), the Uttarayan complex of Tagore's residences (now museums), and the Cheena Bhavana centre for Chinese studies. The Poush Mela in December and the Basanta Utsav (Holi) in March are the campus's two famous festivals — both open to visitors.
