About this place
Showing English while we prepare the translationThe Undavalli Caves are a 5th-century rock-cut monument cut into the side of a single sandstone hill across the Krishna river from Vijayawada. The four-storey complex was originally Buddhist (mid-Pallava period), then converted to a Hindu Vaishnava shrine when the Vishnukundina kings established themselves in the region. The most striking interior feature is a colossal monolithic reclining Vishnu (Anantha Shayana) carved from a single block of granite — the figure is 5.5 metres long and shows Vishnu in his cosmic sleep on the serpent Adishesha.
The four storeys ascend in scale and decoration. The lowest is unfinished, with rough columns hinting at original Buddhist viharas. The second contains the reclining Vishnu and is the visitor focus. The third storey shows fully developed Pallava-style temple architecture with carved pillars and lion bracket capitals. The fourth, partially collapsed, was likely used as a small private shrine. Inscriptions inside name the patron as Madhava Reddy of the Reddy dynasty (14th-century renovation).
Undavalli is 8 km from Vijayawada and 22 km from Guntur, an easy half-day stop. The caves are typically combined with the Kondaveedu Fort (45 km) and the Amaravati Stupa archaeological site (35 km) on a single Buddhist-and-Hindu heritage route through the Krishna delta.
