About this place

Perched 853 metres above Tirupati on the Tirumala hills, the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple is the wealthiest and most-visited Hindu temple anywhere. The presiding deity, Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu), is worshipped as the protector of the kali yuga; popular belief holds that he descended here to save mankind from the trials of the present age. The shrine has been in continuous worship since at least the 9th century and was patronised in turn by the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, and the Vijayanagara emperors — Krishnadevaraya himself made multiple pilgrimages and donated extensive endowments still recorded in the temple's inscriptions. The temple receives 60,000–100,000 pilgrims a day on average and crosses 500,000 on peak festival days like Brahmotsavam. The compulsory tonsuring ritual (where devotees offer their hair) yields tonnes of hair annually, which the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) auctions to the international wig trade — a steady revenue stream for the temple's vast charitable programmes. The famous laddu prasadam, made in the temple kitchens since 1715, holds a Geographical Indication tag. The darshan queue runs in waves: free 'Sarva Darshanam' takes 3–8 hours, the paid 'Special Entry Darshan' (₹300) takes 1–2 hours, and 'VIP break darshan' is reserved for state guests. Most visitors stay overnight in the TTD's vast accommodation network. Photography is forbidden inside the temple complex; phones must be deposited at the entrance.
