Calangute is a 7 km stretch of broad, flat sand on Goa's north coast — the longest beach in North Goa and, since the 1960s, the central node of Goa's tourism economy. The hippie trail of the late 1960s and 70s discovered it first; package tourism arrived in the 1980s; in the 2010s it became the most-visited beach in India by raw footfall. What that means in practice: the beach itself is wide and clean (the local panchayat runs morning sweeps), but it is intensely commercialised. Beach shacks — temporary structures licensed seasonally between October and May — line the high-water mark, serving Goan fish curry, tandoori prawns, and very cold Kingfisher to a clientele that's heavy on Russian, British, and Indian-domestic tourists. Watersports operators offer parasailing, jet-ski, banana-boat, and bumper-ride packages off the central section. For a quieter beach experience, walk 30 minutes north to Baga (still busy but less so) or 15 minutes south to Candolim (more upmarket). Anjuna's flea market on Wednesdays is a standard day-trip. Avoid the monsoon season (June to September) — most shacks are dismantled, the sea is too rough for swimming, and the water is muddy. The best months are December to February: clear seas, mid-20s°C temperatures, and the highest concentration of tourists.
