Orchha was founded in 1531 by Bundela Rajput king Rudra Pratap Singh and served as the capital of the Bundela kingdom for two centuries. The fort complex sits on an island in the Betwa river — three palaces, a temple to Vishnu, and 14 cenotaphs (chhatris) along the river bank, all in the same Bundela style of red sandstone and white plaster. The Jahangir Mahal, built by Bir Singh Deo in 1606 to commemorate Mughal emperor Jahangir's one-night stay, is the most photographed structure — eight vaulted bedrooms around a central courtyard with hanging balconies and chhatris. The Raj Mahal next door is more austere but holds Bundela-period murals depicting court life. The Chaturbhuj Temple was built to house an idol of Rama brought from Ayodhya by Queen Ganesh Kunwari — the idol never made it inside (legend says it refused to be moved from a temporary altar in her palace), and the temple has remained empty ever since while the alternate Ram Raja Temple, in her old palace, became the active shrine.
