The Great Stupa at Sanchi was originally commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE as a brick mound enclosing relics of the Buddha and his disciples. The Sungas, a century after Ashoka, doubled the stupa's diameter and added the harmika and chhatra at the top. The four toranas (gateways) at the cardinal directions — added by the Satavahanas around the 1st century BCE — are the structural masterpieces of the site, with detailed reliefs of Jataka tales, Ashoka's life, and scenes from the Buddha's biography. Unusually, the Buddha is never depicted as a human figure on the Sanchi reliefs — he is represented only by symbols (the Bodhi tree, footprints, an empty throne, the Dharmachakra). This aniconic phase predates the Gandhara/Mathura schools that would later show the Buddha in human form. UNESCO inscribed Sanchi in 1989. The hill site holds 50+ structural ruins; allow half a day. Bhopal is 46 km away and the standard base.
