Srisailam Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga

The Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy temple at Srisailam is unique in Hindu sacred geography: it is simultaneously one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (where Shiva self-manifested as a column of light) and one of the 18 Shakti Peethas (where parts of Sati's body fell during Vishnu's intervention). Pilgrims who normally make two separate journeys can complete both on the same hilltop. The temple sits on the Nallamala range, inside the Srisailam Tiger Reserve, with the dammed Krishna river on three sides. The present temple structure dates largely to the 14th-century Reddy and Vijayanagara periods, though the site is mentioned in the Mahabharata and the Skanda Purana. The mukha mandapa carvings depict scenes from the lives of saints like Akka Mahadevi and Allama Prabhu, both associated with Srisailam. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have composed the Sivananda Lahari here. Most visitors combine darshan with a boat ride on the Pathalaganga (the Krishna river ghat below the temple) and a stop at Akkamahadevi Caves accessible only by boat. The drive in, through the tiger reserve, occasionally yields chital, sambhar, or wild boar sightings. Maha Shivratri (February/March) is the largest festival; expect crowds in the lakhs.
