Chitrakote Falls

Chitrakote Falls is the widest waterfall in India — a 300-metre horseshoe curve on the Indravati river in Bastar district, Chhattisgarh, dropping 29 metres over a sandstone-and-granite escarpment. The falls' shape, span, and characteristic spray have earned it the local nickname 'the Niagara of India', though at one-fifth the width and one-fifth the height of the actual Niagara, the comparison is generous. Still, in peak monsoon (July-September) the falls have an immense volume and a kilometre-wide mist plume. The area was historically inaccessible due to the 30-year Maoist insurgency in the surrounding Bastar region; security has improved markedly since 2018, and Chhattisgarh Tourism has built viewing platforms, parking, and a cable bridge for closer viewing. The falls are 38 km from Jagdalpur, the regional headquarters. Combine with the Tirathgarh Falls (32 km, a smaller multi-drop waterfall in dense forest) and the Kanger Valley National Park (45 km, with the Kotumsar limestone caves) for a 2-3 day Bastar itinerary. Avoid the tribal markets near the falls during night-time; daylight visits are uniformly safe.
