Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta Caves — local Marathi name Gharapuri ('city of caves') — are seven rock-cut Hindu cave temples on Gharapuri Island in Mumbai Harbour, dated between the 5th and 8th centuries CE. The Portuguese, who used the great central cave as a target range and damaged several reliefs, named the island after the colossal stone elephant they found at the landing — now relocated to Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai. The principal cave (Cave 1) is the masterpiece: a 39-metre-deep mandapa with 26 columns, organised around the Sadashiva ('Eternal Shiva') Trimurti relief on the south wall — three monumental faces showing Shiva as creator, preserver, and destroyer. Adjacent panels show the Ardhanarishvara (half-male, half-female form), the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, the descent of Ganga, Ravana shaking Mount Kailash, and the slaying of Andhakasura. The carving style is the apogee of late-Gupta sculptural confidence — fluid, monumental, deeply emotional. UNESCO inscribed the caves in 1987. Access is by hourly ferry from the Gateway of India (around 1 hour each way). Avoid Monday (closed), avoid June–September (rough seas, ferry suspensions). Pack water — the climb to the caves is exposed.
