About this place

Showing English while we prepare the translation
Commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to mark his victory over the Cholas at Talakad, the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur took 103 years to complete and is the marquee Hoysala-period monument. The temple is built from soapstone (chloritic schist) — a stone soft enough to carve in detail and hard enough to weather centuries. Every external surface is covered in friezes: rows of elephants, horsemen, dancers, and 644 individual figural panels including the famously detailed 'shilabalika' (celestial maidens) bracket figures. The Chennakeshava Temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023 as part of the 'Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas' (with Halebidu and Somanathapura). Belur sits 35 km from Hassan and is typically visited as a day trip combining Halebidu (the Hoysaleswara Temple) — the two are 16 km apart and easily done together.
