Significance

Showing English while we prepare the translation
Kanjanur Agnipureeswarar Temple is the Navagraha temple for Sukran (Venus). Lord Shiva is worshipped as Agnipureeswarar. Uniquely, Sukra Bhagavan does not have a separate shrine — it is believed Shiva himself absorbs the affliction of Sukran for devotees. The temple has a five-tier rajagopuram and lies about 18 km north-east of Kumbakonam. Devotees pray for marriage, marital harmony, beauty, wealth and the arts — domains traditionally associated with Venus. Friday is the special day for Sukran worship. The temple was built by the Medieval Cholas and renovated by the Vijayanagar kings. Six daily rituals are performed.
