Haji Ali Dargah

The Haji Ali Dargah sits on a small islet in the Arabian Sea about 500 metres off Worli's western shore, connected to the city by a narrow causeway that submerges at high tide. The shrine commemorates Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, a 15th-century Sufi merchant from Bukhara who, according to local tradition, gave away his wealth before pilgrimage to Mecca and died at sea — his coffin floating back to this rock. The present white-marble structure dates from the early 19th century, with a 26-metre central dome and 85 minarets at varying heights. Renovation work between 2008 and 2017 used Makrana marble from the same Rajasthan quarries that supplied the Taj Mahal. The interior contains an ornately tiled sanctum with the Pir's tomb at the centre. Friday qawwali sessions — devotional Sufi music — are open to all visitors. The dargah is among Mumbai's most-visited spiritual sites, drawing roughly 80,000 pilgrims weekly. Visitors of all faiths are welcome. Modest dress required; head covering for women provided at the entrance. The causeway is impassable at high tide — check tide tables before visiting.
