Mahabalipuram Shore Temple

Mahabalipuram (officially Mamallapuram) was the port and ceremonial centre of the Pallava dynasty under Narasimhavarman II. The Shore Temple, built around 700–728 CE, is one of the earliest stone-cut structural temples in South India — a five-storey granite vimana for Shiva flanked by a smaller Vishnu shrine, set just metres from the surf. The 2004 tsunami briefly exposed two more temples on the seabed, confirming local lore that Mahabalipuram once had 'seven pagodas' lost to the sea. The broader Mahabalipuram complex — UNESCO-inscribed 1984 — also includes the Five Rathas (monolithic temples each carved from a single rock), the Krishna Mandapa cave temples, and Arjuna's Penance, a 27 m × 9 m bas-relief widely considered the largest open-air rock carving in Asia. The site sits 60 km south of Chennai and is doable as a long day trip with a stop at the East Coast Road's beach resorts.
