About this place
Pushkar is one of the five sacred sites of Hindu pilgrimage (Panch-Tirtha) and home to one of the very few Brahma temples in active worship anywhere — most Hindu temples are dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva, or the goddess. The Jagatpita Brahma Mandir at Pushkar is built around the legend that Brahma performed a yajna at this exact spot to fill a lake at this auspicious site, and devotees who bathe in the Pushkar Lake on Kartik Purnima (Nov full moon) gain spiritual merit equivalent to a year of penance.
The present temple structure is 14th century with later renovations; the inner sanctum has a four-faced Brahma idol with consort Gayatri. The lake itself is ringed by 52 ghats, each named for a different mythological event. The Pushkar Camel Fair, held the seven days leading up to Kartik Purnima, is one of the world's largest camel fairs — 50,000+ camels, horses, and cattle traded each year, alongside cultural shows and a tourist circuit.
