About this place

The Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple at Palampet was commissioned by Kakatiya king Recharla Rudra in 1213 CE under the patronage of King Ganapati Deva. It is the only Indian temple known to be popularly named after its sculptor — Ramappa — rather than the deity (Shiva, here as Ramalingeswara). UNESCO inscribed it in 2021 as the 'Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, Telangana'. The temple has two extraordinary engineering features. The 4-metre-tall sandstone shikhara is constructed from 'floating bricks' — porous, lightweight bricks that genuinely float on water (visitors can demonstrate this with the temple's small water tank); the result is a top-heavy temple that has nonetheless survived 800 years of weathering. Second, the temple's foundation rests on a 'sandbox' technique — a 3-metre-deep pit filled with sand absorbs seismic shock, making the structure unusually earthquake-resistant. The temple's carved figures (including the famous Madanika bracket figures of celestial dancers) and the granite Nandi outside are also UNESCO-grade. The site is 70 km from Warangal and 220 km from Hyderabad.
